CT scans combine specialized x-rays with innovative computers to provide images of anatomy in exquisite detail. Clearer pictures allow your doctor to make an earlier and more precise diagnosis of your condition and response to treatment. CT (computed tomography) scan is a specialized test in which a machine passes x-rays through the body at various angles to obtain information which is reconstructed into a picture by a computer. This allows for detailed demonstration of internal anatomy. A CT is a large square shaped machine. It has a good-sized hole in the middle, much like a doughnut. The patient lies on an associated table, which moves into and out of the hole as x-rays are generated by a rotating gantry. The movements produce clicking and whirring noises. It may be necessary to have iodinated contrast to better define your anatomy. You may be asked to drink contrast, and/or may require an intravenous injection of contrast. We use only non-ionic contrast media, the safest available. Patients with iodinated contest allergies who need to undergo a CT scan should receive special pre-procedural preparation to reduce the risk of allergic reaction and should be scanned in a hospital setting. |
